Marwa Elselehdar is Egypt’s first female captain of a ship. She was the first female graduate of the Department of Maritime Transport and Technology at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport in 2013, and as of April 2021, she holds the rank of the first mate on the Aida IV. She was born in Egypt in 1991.

Education
She enrolled in the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), where she studied International Transport and Logistics and he studied Maritime Transport and Technology, which at the time was only available to men.
She eventually applied to DMTT anyway, and after a legal examination by Hosni Mubarak, she was accepted, making her the only woman among the 1200 students.
Despite sexism during her studies, she graduated in 2013 and went on to become a First Mate.
Career
When she captained the first vessel through the widened Suez Canal, the MV Aida IV, in 2015, she became Egypt’s first female ship captain. She was the youngest and first Egyptian female captain to do so.

Abdel Fattah el-Sisi honored her in 2017 during Egypt’s Women’s Day celebrations. In May 2021, she will take her final exam to receive the rank of Captain.
She has a master’s degree in business administration from Cardiff Metropolitan University as well.
